The book is a
mouthwatering new pilot to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, a whopping 700-Plus
pages of pilotage and carefully hand-drawn charts for every little inlet, cove
and channel on this magnificent coast. It has been lovingly
compiled by Italian sailors Mariolina Rolfo and Giorgio Ardrizzi, and
published in English.
They spent many years
cruising here in their Amel Saudade III.
Their spectacular photos make you ache to be there.

PATAGONIA & TIERRA DEL FUEGO
NAUTICAL GUIDE
Published in English by the Italian sailing magazine BOLINA
this comprehensive cruising guide covers the coasts of Chile and Argentina
from Valdivia to Mar del Plata. The two authors have spent eight years on
their yacht Saudade III in the area. Every one of the four hundred
anchorages has been checked out by the authors, who are almost unique in the
realm of cruising guides by only including in their book places that they know
from personal experience. The result is an absolute godsend to anyone planning
to visit that part of the world, which I rate as one of the most beautiful
cruising grounds anywhere. The description of every anchorage is accompanied
by a clear plan, with recommendations as to where it is best to anchor as well
as other practical tips. My first reaction after doing a few spot checks of my
own favourite anchorages was: I wish I had this book when I cruised Southern
Chile in 1999. At the time I used the existing Imray pilot as well as Alberto
Mantellero’s rather outdated guide, but this new book puts everything else in
the shade.
Apart from dealing in detail with any anchorage worth
mentioning, the book also contains much practical information on local weather
conditions and forecasts, formalities, fuel and provisioning, as well as some
sound advice on the boat, equipment and clothing that are suitable for this
area. Bunched together in two sections is a wide selection of colour
photographs, which has been an inspired addition as no words can do justice to
the stunning scenery and wild beauty of this remote and little visited corner
of the globe.

dell'estremo Sud America.
eventuali carte americane, cilene o argentine.

Guide - Mariolina Rolfo and Giorgio Ardrizzi
Editrice Incontri
Nautici, 2004, CA 16488
In
the years that I have reviewed books for the CA this is the best I have seen:
an exceptional book. It not only gives the reader more than sufficient
sailing instructions to sail this area, it also inspires you to go and do it.
The book is divided
into two sections, General information which covers preparations for the
voyage, the history of the region, flora, fauna, geology and meteorology and
Pilot which provides detailed sketch maps of anchorages and harbours from
Valdivia to Mar del Plata including Isla de los Estados and Cabo de
Hornos. Both sections are a delight to read both in terms of factual sailing
details and in background information on this little travelled area. The whole
is complemented by in-text black and white photographs and high quality colour
sections.
The detail that the
authors include is staggering. In the General Information section, the
preparations section is pleasingly short and assumes that anyone who wants to
go this area has a fair grounding in long distance cruising. The authors give
the additional information that is unique to cruising in a remote, sometimes
hostile, area. Boat preparation is well covered as is specific information on
Argentina and Chile. The other general information chapters include an
anthropological history of the native tribes, descriptions and line drawings
of the flora and fauna and all one would need to know about the weather and
how to obtain local forecasts. The whole is liberally sprinkled with period
photographs including one of white settlers hunting Indians.
The detail doesn’t
stop in the Pilot section which is 500 pages long and provides details of
harbours and anchorages covering the whole of the coast line. The authors’
stated aim was to find at least one safe haven every five miles along the
whole of the coast. They say that they have largely succeeded providing
minute details of over 400 locations. All of these they have visited and have
provided detailed sketchmaps of each. This is truly a comprehensive work.
The authors say that
while 20 yachts sailed the area between 1902 and 1970, the number exceeded 700
in the thirty years after. This is a location of myth, legend and derring-do
that most of us would only dream about sailing to and these authors have
provided a key that could unlock the area to anyone who has the time and the
inclination to travel to one of the last truly wild areas of the world. I
recommend this book to those who will travel there both by sail and
imagination.

From the journal of
OCC "FLYING
FISH" 2004/1 by
Ian Jenkins (SY Pen Azen)
To date (with due respect to
the Mantellero Pilot) the definitive Pilot for Chile has been that written by
Ian and Maggy Staples and Tony and Coryn Gooch for the RCC Pilotage
Foundation, published by Imray in 1998 with a second edition just out (see
opposite). Having used that marvellous book as our bible during our first
season in Chile it was difficult to imagine that another book could exist
which could rival it. Such a book has now been published, and in relation to
any pilot anywhere this is an extraordinary book.
By background Rolfo is a high
altitude skier and speleologist (caves) and Ardrizzi a professional musician.
Now in their late 40s, they sailed from Italy in 1992 in their 41ft ketch
Saudade III, arriving in Chile from Argentina in 1995. An interest in pilotage
developed into a passion, and they started collecting information from other
sailors and preparing their own. Already, by 1998, they had much to add to
what was known about Southem Chile, as the preface to the Pilotage Foundation
volume acknowledges. Five years later, with sponsorship from Sally Berte and
Valentino Blancardi, owners of the yacht Plum, they have published their own
book.
The 719 pages (written in
excellent English) are divided into chapters dealing with preparations,
information about Chile and Argentina, over 150 pages on the history of the
region, geology, flora, fauna, ancient inhabitants and meteorology. These
preface the 506 pages of pílotage information and charts. The authors' aim was
to locate and describe a safe and easily accessed cove every 5 miles along the
route between Estrecho de la Maire and Valdivia. In most cases they have
succeeded, describing more than 423 anchorages accompanied by 407 charts.
(Indeed, so successful have they been that they have encountered hostility
from some charter skippers based in Ushuaia and Puerto Williams, fearful for
their trade if the mystique of Patagonia is too widely shared. By contrast,
the highly experienced skipper of the 82ft Swan Gloriana, based in Puerto
Montt, has already bought six copies.)
Each anchorage is described
under standard headings giving essential information at a glance. The
accompanying chart is very clear and, from our own experience of the 30-odd
which we have used in the last few months, very accurate. In addition to
excellent pilotage information, many of the anchorages have historical
information added - for instance, the source of the name and a brief
description of the original survey. Thus it is interesting to learn of the
extent of Italian surveys of the area in the late 19th century and their
legacy of names including Rossi, Caracciolo, Denaro, Gaeta, Calabria etc.
Also included are descriptions
of services (in those few places where such exist), places of interest and the
like. Puerto Williams, for instance, merits nine pages including four pages of
descriptions and maps of hikes ashore. It is not often mentioned that one of
the drawbacks of cruising the Chilean Canals is a lack of daily exercise,
other than that associated with sailing, mooring and casting off. Many
anchorages have thick vegetation to the water’s edge, inhibiting walking
ashore. Descriptions of hiking opportunities, therefore, have a particular
value.
This is a book to be
treasured. In my opinion it ranks with the best pilot books you will ever own.
I would still find it fascinating and rewarding to read even if we were not
sailing in Chilean waters. To have on board both the Pilotage Foundation pilot
and this one is riches indeed. € 75 may sound pricey, but the quality and
extent of information in the Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego Nautical Guide make
it a bargain. |
